What to Expect

Welcome:  You are welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our classes.

Parking:  AFUMC has three parking  lots; one on the South side of the building (half of which are handicapped) One on the West side of the lot which is our “rear” lot. One on the East lot, which is our main lot.

Entering the Church:  There are two main entrances to the church. The front entrance into the sanctuary narthex is from the East parking lot. The West Lobby entrance is from the West parking lot. There is a third entrance you may use from the southern side of the East parking lot. When Church is in session, the only doors that will be unlocked, will be from the East main entrance.

As a Visitor:  You will not be asked to stand up or to wear a red ribbon, but you may be greeted and welcomed by any number of our church family. A Friendship Pad is located in the pews and we ask that you sign it and place it in the offering. You will receive additional information from our church and a note during the week.

Diversity:  People come to our church from the far corners of Cherokee County. Some people walk to church and others drive past many other churches to come here because they want to be a part of a unique experience. We believe and work hard at “Embracing All People.” Every person is a child of God and we accept them as they are. We are diverse in theology. John Wesley believed that “In essentials unity, in non-essentials freedom, in all things charity.” That is what we strive for at our Church.

Sunday Worship:  There are greeters/ushers at the east main entrance as you enter on Sunday mornings who can help you find your way and can also answer any questions you might have.  Upon entering the sanctuary you will be greeted and handed a bulletin that will give you all the information you will need to participate in the worship service. It will also include our weekly announcements and a sign-up sheet for events being held.

Dress:  We have no dress code! Suits or jeans, wear whatever you feel comfortable in as you worship God.

Children:  We love children and consider them a vital part of our church family.  There are children’s worship activity bags back by the Audio/Video booth that will help your child connect with the service.

Holy Communion:  We practice open communion. You do not need to be a member of First Church to participate. Communion is served on the first Sunday of the month.

Do I have to join your church?  No, you do not have to join, you are always welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups. We provide more information about our Methodist church here on our website to learn more about AFUMC, and we encourage you to come and learn even if you have no intention of joining.  Membership is a choice and commitment which we want you to make only when the time is right for you. You can become a member by Baptism and Profession of Faith, or by Transfer from another United Methodist Church or another denomination. We believe that the Holy Spirit works within other churches and if you have previously been baptized we do not “re-baptize” you.

Sunday Worship: A faith community that is inclusive and affirming of ALL people.
